Review: The World-Class Brain (2025)

The classification of the term “world-class brain”—coined by H. S. Harung and F. Travis—from the perspective of modern expertise research and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.

When Springer Verlag, Berlin, published the new editions of the book *The World Class Brain* by H. S. Harung and F. Travis in English and German in 2025/26, Arne Güllich and his team’s comprehensive meta-study appeared independently in Science providing empirical evidence that a multidisciplinary education is a prerequisite for world-class expertise. During the same period, the reviewer explored the yogic theory of coherence.

The relevance of these two perspectives on the world-class brain rests on the concepts of integration and coherence, which run throughout the entire book by H. S. Harung and F. Travis, as well as on their experience-based research approach. Yoga is, on the one hand, the Sanskrit term for orderly interaction and, at the same time, the method by which such interaction can be systematically cultivated, with immediately perceptible effects.

Although terms such as “world-class expertise” and “world-class brain” may sound like populist slogans or marketing clichés, in the context of talent and expertise research they are scientific technical terms that are precisely operationalized in performance psychology and neurobiology.

The same applies to the term “top performer.” This term was already established in the fields of performance and work science in the 1990s as a precisely defined technical term (often operationalized as “high performer” or “expert performer”). It refers to individuals whose performance is statistically significant above the mean of a standardized comparison group, usually in the top 5 to 10 percent. Expertise research uses this distinction to make the performance level empirically measurable. 

To specify the performance difference between top performers as the regionally present experts and the globally recognized top performers through outstanding achievements, the term "World-Class Performer" was introduced.

The precise distinction between top performers and world-class expertise can already be found in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Top performers are referred to as Siddha and world-class expertise as Vibhuti. The Vibhuti is the topic of the entire third chapter of the Yoga Sutras (the Yoga Sutras have a total of four chapters). So even in yoga, the seemingly small difference between top and world-class performers is of great theoretical and practical significance, which will be explained in more detail.

The distinction between the modern terms "top performers" (regional top talents, e.g., in a corporate or national context) and "world-class performers" (world wide recognized top performers) dates back to the Swedish psychologist K. Anders Ericsson in the 1990s.

Ericsson established expertise research (Expertise Theory) as a scientific discipline through this distinction. His groundbreaking research paper published in 1993, "The Role of Deliberate Practice in the Acquisition of Expert Performance," is considered the foundation of this theory.

Before Ericsson's research, it was believed that "top performers" and "world-class achievers" only differed gradually in the amount of their innate talent. Ericsson wanted to know more precisely and compared violinists from the renowned West Berlin Music Academy, whom he divided into three groups:
  • Average performers (future music teachers).
  • Top performers (good soloists/orchestral musicians at the national level).
  • World-class performer (the global elite with an international solo career).
He found that the difference between a very good top performer and a world-class performer was not based on talent (genetics), but on the structuring of their training.

From Ericsson's work (which was later popularized by authors such as Malcolm Gladwell thru the "10,000-Hour Rule" and Geoff Colvin in "Talent Is Overrated"), a theory emerged stating that world-class performers operate according to completely different patterns than conventional achievers, and he was able to provide three main reasons for this:

The principle of "deliberate practice": A top performer often repeats what they already do well to achieve routine and flawless efficiency. A world-class performer, on the other hand, consistently trains outside their comfort zone. He specifically looks for his own weaknesses and seeks methods to eliminate them.

Systematic feedback & metacognition: While top performers often attribute mistakes to external circumstances (customers, weather, bad luck), world-class performers possess extreme "metacognition." They can observe themselves during execution, analyze mistakes in real-time, and take full, radical responsibility for the outcome.

The focus on mental representations: World-class performers develop highly complex, detailed intuitive mental images of their work in their brains (e.g., chess grandmasters who recall thousands of game configurations in a fraction of a second). Top performers tend to work with linear, learned rules.

H. S. Harung and F. Travis were inspired by Ericsson's pioneering work in their research but took a crucial step further: They examined precisely those top athletes and musicians who met Ericsson's criteria for world-class performance using EEG and discovered the neurobiological correlate of peak performance – global brain integration (high alpha coherence). and coined the term "World-Class Brain" based on this discovery.

The term "World-Class Brain" initially sounds like a slogan from self-help literature. However, behind this term, Harung and Travis have a precisely defined neurobiological measurement.

"World-Class Brain" is the equivalent of the academic term "High Brain Integration Index" (Brain Integration Scale / BIS). When the researchers talk about a world-class brain, they do not mean an abstract ideal, but a brain that meets measurable, mathematically calculable criteria in the EEG (high alpha phase synchronization, superior cortical connectivity, and extreme neural economy). In this context, Harung and Travis primarily use the term coherence.

At the same time, Harung and Travis also demonstrated for the first time that the methods of the Vedic culture systematized in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali enable exactly that state of coherence in the brain, which forms the neurophysiological basis for sustainable world-class performance. This topic is dealt with to the fourth chapter of the Yoga Sutras - Kaivalya Pada.

H. S. Harung and Frederick Travis (the founders of the World-Class Brain theory) explicitly refer to K. Anders Ericsson in their works and use his selection of subjects to neurobiologically test his theory. Harung and Travis asked themselves the question: "What happens in the minds of people who meet Ericsson's criteria for world-class?"

For their studies, they specifically looked for athletes who had won medals at the Olympics or World Championships, and for musicians from top-tier orchestras. These are exactly the groups that Ericsson had defined as prime examples of decades-long "deliberate practice." While Ericsson only measured external behavior (hours of training, feedback loops), Harung and Travis connected these individuals to an EEG to measure the neurological correlate (brain integration).

Both research directions complement each other: Ericsson's expertise theory provides the "WHAT" and "HOW": It explains that one achieves world-class performance through highly focused, often strenuous training at the edge of one's capabilities. The Brain Integration Theory by Harung and Travis provides the "WHAT": It shows that a certain structured training (especially techniques like meditation) physically changes the brain over time. It leads to higher cortical connectivity. A "world-class brain" is essentially the biological end product needed to retrieve Ericsson's complex mental representations flawlessly and at lightning speed.

However, there is a fundamental difference between the two research approaches:
K. A. Ericsson emphasized that practice is not inherently fun. It is hard, often monotonous, and exhausting work. Harung and Travis, on the other hand, emphasize that true world-class performers are characterized by "effortless efficiency" and frequent peak experiences at the moment of execution. Their argument: Those who only train in "pain mode" may become a tense top performer, but not an integrated, fluid world-class brain.

In the Yoga Sutras, these two approaches are precisely specified through the concepts of Vibhuti (creative expressions) and Siddhis (extraordinary abilities/perfections), so that they can be linked with the findings of modern performance research. While modern science speaks of "top performers" and "world-class brains," Patanjali in addition described the inner mechanisms through which they differ: the optimal development of human performance potential.

To be able to bridge the gap, one must understand the exact meaning of the two terms in the yogic context:

Siddhis: These are "perfections" or extraordinary abilities in general.
Vibhuti: The word means creive expression and characterizes the manifestation of inner maturity as mastery in the outer world.

Siddhi performance only becomes Vibhuti when Samadhi (pure consciousness) is the foundation of the enhancement. The key to the Vibhuti, according to Patanjali, is Samyama. That is, the connection of Dharana (attention), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (pure consciousness) into a single, effortless flow. Only a performance connected with Samadhi (pure consciousness) remains free from destructive side effects. 

Patanjali is quite clear here: Those who remain at the level of isolated abilities constantly create obstacles according to Sutra 3.38 – a finding that modern talent research empirically confirms as a risk of burnout and stagnation due to one-sided training. 

The two concepts therefore precisely reflect the distinction found in modern expertise and brain research: 

1. The "Siddhis" fit the concept of top performers (regional excellence). Top performers are distinguished by their ability to acquire exceptional skills (Siddhis) in a specific area. A top performer invests years of disciplined practice (Deliberate Practice according to Ericsson). As a result, he develops a skill that seems unattainable to the layperson—be it the lightning-fast calculation of market options as a broker or the flawless execution of a surgical operation. In Patanjali's view, Siddhis are the result of multiple causes. One of them is disciplined practice. 

2. The "Vibhuti" fit the concept of the world-class brain (holistic integration) The concept of Vibhuti goes far beyond a mere, isolated ability. It describes a state in which the entire system of the practitioner is permeated by a higher order and coherence. This corresponds exactly to the Brain Integration Theory of Harung and Travis. A "world-class brain" is characterized not only by its ability to perform a task well but also by a global, synchronous collaboration of all brain areas (high alpha coherence). When a person possesses high brain integration, it radiates into all areas of life according to research – they exhibit higher moral judgment, emotional stability, and creative genius. That is exactly what Vibhuti is: the universal manifestation of a fully integrated consciousness that no longer has to work in a tense manner but instead acts from the "flow." 

In Yoga Sutra 4.1, Patanjali mentions five causes for top performance (Siddhi): 
janma, oshadhi, mantra, tapa, and samadhi, 
which is also entirely in line with findings from modern performance research.

Translated into the terms of performance psychology and biology, the terms mean:
1. Janma (birth/genetics) in yoga refers to innate abilities or the inherent constitution. In modern terms, the genetic predisposition or the natural talent. These are the physical and cognitive starting conditions. For example, a basketball player with a genetically determined height of 2.10 meters or a musician with an innate perfect pitch. It is the biological hardware that promotes early "top performance," but does not guaranty world-class status.
2. Oshadhi (herbs) refers to biochemical factors in yoga. In modern competitive sports, this refers to pharmacological optimization through biohacking. This includes everything that chemically manipulates the body or mind from the outside to force peak performance. In sports, it is classic doping (like EPO or steroids), in the academic or business field it is the so-called "brain doping" through nootropics, Ritalin, or excessive caffeine consumption. Thus, the chemistry in the brain supports a temporary phase of high performance, but it is artificial and not sustainable. 
3. Mantras (formulas) in yoga are sound formulas that generate specific neural and energetic vibrations through resonance. The modern term would be "cognitive behavioral technique" (routine), which tunes the nervous system to a familiar task.
4. Tapa (discipline) in yoga is the endurance of deprivation (asceticism), intense self-discipline, and the "purification" of impurities through inner heat. Modernly expressed, these are all practices directed by willpower ("grit"), particularly K. Anders Ericsson's concept of accepting the pain of effort to grow. An athlete who trains every morning at 4:30 AM in the freezing rain, or a manager who forgoes leisure time to optimize a project, practices modern Tapa. It forges an extremely resilient top performer thru sheer willpower and hard work. 
5. Samadhi (pure consciousness) is in yoga the simplest, unbounded state of conscious mind. Modern terms are Abraham Maslow's peak experience and Mihály Csíkszentmihályi's flow state. Modern neuroscience identifies this with the deactivation of the will-driven network – Default Mode Network – while simultaneously achieving global alpha coherence. Harung and Travis demonstrate that this very state represents the biological hardware for world-class performance.

The first four methods (genetics, substances, routines, hard discipline) can make a person an outstanding specialist (top performer). But they carry the risk of fragmentation: The athlete only functions in the stadium, the manager collapses privately, the system is under constant stress. Samadhi, on the other hand, refers to the immersion in pure, boundless consciousness. Neurobiologically, this corresponds – as examined by Harung and Travis – to maximum brain integration. It repairs the exhaustion of Tapa (discipline). It cleanses the impact of Oshadhi (biochemistry). It leads the brain into a global alpha synchronization. Only when performance no longer stems from excessive willpower (Tapa) or external aids (Oshadhi), but flows from the inexhaustible, calm foundation of pure consciousness (Samadhi), does Patanjali speak of Vibhuti – the effortlessly shining world-class that positively influences the entire environment. 

Top performers are therefore explicitly warned by Patanjali: Siddhis are milestones, but they can become obstacles (Upasargas) to universal consciousness (Kaivalya) (Sutra 3.38). 

True, holistic excellence (Vibhuti), based on the transformation of the entire system, requires the complete integration of the mind – that is, Samadhi (pure consciousness). 

The study by Arne Güllich et al. (2025) 


In the criticism of pure top performers, the circle closes from yoga to the study by Arne Güllich and colleagues in the field of empirical performance research. 

The risk of the top performer: Those who specialize too early and focus solely on their specific "Siddhi" (their one ability) develop an extreme performance orientation. If this performance declines (due to age, injury, or market changes), the system collapses (burnout, stagnation). He remains trapped on a performance plateau. 

The path to world-class performance: True world-class performers utilize their abilities but are not bound by them. They have cultivated their entire system (their consciousness/their brain) so broadly and deeply that they can flexibly respond to new situations at any time. They strive for complete integration (Vibhuti), not just the mere display of an isolated superpower. 

The empirical research published by Arne Güllich and his colleagues in 2025 confirms the distinction of the Yoga Sutras in a remarkably precise manner. His data reflect Patanjali's warnings and principles almost one-to-one in the modern performance biography. Güllich provides the statistical evidence that the first four causes from Sutra 4.1 (Janma, Oshadhi, Mantra, Tapa) indeed create top performers (Siddhas), but often block the path to true world-class (Vibhuti). The parallels between Güllich's discoveries and the Yoga Sutras can be summarized in three key points: 

1. The "talent paradox" confirms Patanjali's warning about the Siddhis.
Güllich's finding: Adolescents who dominate a discipline extremely early as "child prodigies" almost completely disappear from the scene in adulthood. The statistical overlap between successful adolescents and later world-class adults is less than 10%. 
The Yoga Sutra parallel: Patanjali warns in Sutra 3.38 that Siddhis (isolated superpowers) may appear as achievements in worldly life, but they pose massive obstacles to true higher development (Kaivalya / Vibhuti). Whoever fixates too early on a single ability feeds their pride with this quick success and stagnates. 
2. "Tapa" (hard specialization) only produces linear top performers 
Güllich's finding: Early, excessive specialization – that is, the years of monotonous and often painful drilling into just one sport or instrument – leads to quick youth successes. However, it demonstrably leads to an increased risk of burnout, stagnation, and physical wear and tear in adulthood.
The Yoga Sutra parallel: This is the exact dynamic of pure Tapa (asceticism/discipline) without the balancing component of consciousness. Pure Tapa forces performance through willpower and rigidity against one's own system. It makes the mind rigid, highly specialized, and prone to exhaustion – characteristics of a local top performer, but not of a world-class brain. 
3. Multidisciplinarity as a modern path to "Samadhi" (integration) 
Güllich's finding: The likelihood of reaching the absolute world-class level increases drastically when children and adolescents try a wide range of different disciplines (multidisciplinarity) and specialize only later. They learn more slowly, but develop superior learning competence and adaptability. 
In Patanjali Yoga, the gradual calming and integration of the entire mind (Samadhi) leads to fulfillment. The versatile foundation ensures that the nervous system remains flexible, open, and highly interconnected. This versatility protects the system from stress and allows the more mature athlete or artist to switch into the perfect "flow" (the modern equivalent of Samadhi or Samyama) at the moment of execution.

In this way, Arne Güllich's meta-study supports the insights of the Yoga Sutras: True world-class (Vibhuti) cannot be achieved through artificial shortcuts (Oshadhi), pure talent (Janma), or forced toughness (Tapa). Whoever wants to reach the absolute top and stay there sustainably needs a stable, holistically developed, and integrated foundation – in yoga, it is called Samadhi, and based on the insights of Harung and Travis, it is the "world-class brain." 

Modern training systems or sports academies are currently trying to implement Güllich's findings to move away from the "drill of the top performer" toward the "development of world-class." The findings of H. S. Harung and F. Travis provide a solid foundation for Güllich's results, both theoretically and practically. 

The programmatic plea of this review is the synergy between brain research (Harung & Travis) and talent research (Güllich) to provide a neurobiological foundation for the versatility demanded by Güllich. 


Significance of the world-class brain book by H. S. Harung and F. Travis:


The particular significance of the work of Harald S. Harung and Frederick Travis only fully unfolds when it is combined with the current, monumental findings of modern talent research. What the sports scientist Arne Güllich demonstrates in his large-scale meta-studies as statistical reality in everyday training is given a solid scientific foundation by the Brain Integration Theory of Harung and Travis – both on a practical level and in theory.

The Practical Foundation: From Forced Drill to Effortless Excellence

In practical application, both approaches seamlessly integrate with each other. Güllich's data show that world-class performers often achieve their peak performance in adulthood with astonishing ease and high resilience, while pure top performers tense up under pressure.

The book "The World-Class Brain" translates this observation into a concrete, applicable methodology. Instead of trying to achieve peak performance thru even more strenuous cognitive training or forced willpower, Harung and Travis rely on the principle of effortless transcending. Throuu systematic, deep-acting recovery (such as the technique of Transcendental Meditation), the nervous system is given exactly the regeneration it needs to integrate the complex patterns acquired in training without stress.

In summary, it can be said: Güllich phenomenally describes the "what" and "how" of a successful life biography – Harung and Travis provide the "with what." Only the synthesis of Güllich's plea for multidisciplinary diversity and Harung & Travis's method for the systematic cultivation of brain coherence paves the way for a new era of talent development. The book is thus a programmatic guide for a system that no longer drills people into exhausted specialists, but instead allows them to mature into holistically integrated world-class performers in the sense of Patanjali's Vibhuti.

Theoretical Foundation: Decoding the "Talent Paradox"

Güllich's research uncovered a central paradox: Early, monotonous training in just one discipline (classic Tapa) does indeed produce quick youth successes (top performance), but it often blocks the path to long-term performance optimization (world-class). True world-class performers are characterized by a multidisciplinary, versatile education.

Harung and Travis provide the missing neurobiological piece to the puzzle: Unilateral, early training merely over-optimizes isolated, local brain areas. The system becomes rigid and prone to cognitive blockages or burnout: A versatile upbringing, on the other hand, forces the brain to constantly create new, diverse connections. It results in what Harung and Travis describe as a high brain integration index: a state of global, harmonious alpha coherence, in which the entire brain works together as a perfectly synchronized unit. Versatility thus trains exactly that neural flexibility which forms the biological foundation for the slow maturation process to world-class.

This unfolding process, supported by pure consciousness (Samadhi, Alpha coherence), also includes the simultaneous emergence of social coherence and ecological balance, as demonstrated through independend sociological studies. In the Yoga Sutras, societal harmony takes the form of Yama (the first and most visible expression of yoga), while Samadhi (the eighth and innermost limb) represents its purest and simplest source.

The book by Harung and Travis can therefore rightly be understood as a modern commentary on the Yoga Sutras.

This became even more apparent in the first English edition of 2014: At that time, Harung and Travis explicitly and very detailed compared the theoretical consequences of their research – in line with corresponding developments in quantum physics – with the Unified Field Theory of the fundamental forces of nature within the framework of supergravity and superstrings. 

The proximity to the Yoga Sutras of the new edition of the book is based on the bridging function of the world-class brain, which directly connects the orderly, smooth thinking of the individual (Samyama) with societal coherence (the square-root-of-1% rule of collective coherence - Maharishi effect):

Balanced thinking <> World-class brain (EEG coherence) <> Collective coherence

The key to this formula can be found in Sutra 2.35 of the Yoga Sutras: "In the vicinity of one anchored in Yoga [non-violence], hostile and disorderly tendencies fade away." Social harmony, according to Patanjali, is therefore not a moral dictate, but the automatic, quasi-physical radiance of an integrated consciousness.

This fundamental agreement with the Yoga Sutras makes it clear that Harung and Travis, with their book, are addressing the central deficit of our modern performance-oriented society. They empirically and neurobiologically demonstrate: The path to world-class (Vibhuti) does not lead through  a will-driven, excessive drive for success, but through the systematic cultivation of pure consciousness (Samadhi). Only when the individual attains this inner coherence does not only personal performance transform, but the entire world as well.
